Most of us are aware of the benefits of thinking positive over thinking negative. But many of us are unaware of the importance of not just having a positive mind, but the RIGHT MINDSET. Right thinking is a step above positive thinking, and I truly believe one of the most important factors in a person being able to live out their purpose. Whether in a personal or business manner, having the right mindset is the primary distinction between those who succeed and those who do not. Mastering your mindset and aligning it with your purpose is a must if you are serious about achieving success in any area of your life.
Changing your mindset can not only help you succeed but can transform your life. By shifting your mindset in a few key ways you can change your entire outlook, training your mind to see things in a new light. It can change the course of your work, relationships, finances, and even your purpose. Your goals and dreams become bigger and more ambitious. In fact, a surefire way to determine whether you need to shift your mindset is to answer this question: Are you regularly accomplishing your goals and living your dreams? If you answered “yes” then you probably already have the right mindset, go conquer the world! But if you said “no” then this could be a game-changer for you.
Here are 3 mindset shifts you need to make…preferably now!
Mindset Shift #1: Abundance vs. Scarcity
You probably have already heard of ‘scarcity vs. abundance’ by now, but may not fully understand the relevance and importance of these mindsets to your life. These two terms refer to general attitudes and behaviors that shape the way we act and respond in our daily lives. A Scarcity Mindset is an attitude of just enough. Those with this mindset are content to have just enough time, money, energy or other resources to achieve their goals. They may even feel that there is not enough of one or all of these things but are not willing to look beyond their comfort zones to find more opportunities.
As a result, they focus on the wrong priorities: preservation rather than growth, familiar surroundings instead of new frontiers, and complacency over challenges. They live within their own comfort zones, or worse they live in fear of; of money running out, of sharing success, of never getting where they want to be.
The opposite of this is an Abundant Mindset. Those with this mindset truly believe that there is always enough, actually, they believe that there is more than enough. The universe is filled with limitless resources and all things are possible. They worry less, experience more, and actually “attract” the things they want in an organic, natural way. Rather than getting nervous or stressed they trust, have faith and tend to look at the bigger picture. This allows them to move forward with their life rather than being stuck in the same place because they don’t see opportunities, or are too scared to pursue them. Sure, they have comfort zones, but they are more than happy to step outside them.
So how do you make the shift from a Scarcity Mindset to an Abundant Mindset? Affirmations! Tell yourself every day that you have an abundant mindset, that you were born for abundance, that you are exceptional and bound for greatness, that you have everything you need to create anything you want. Do it in the morning, do it in the evening, do it in the car. Eventually, you will feel the shift begin to happen. I know this from experience. Some other things that you can do: Remind yourself you are more than enough, be careful about the company you keep (stay clear of negativity), be happy for and cheer on other’s success, choose to see opportunity, give to others what you desire.
Mindset Shift #2: Creative vs. Competitive
One paves the road to riches while the other leads to struggle. I first learned this concept from the book “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles. A Competitive Mindset is the mentality that resources are scarce, times are tough and there must be winners and losers. It can cause envy, jealousy, and distrust. When you come from a Competitive Mindset your focus is almost exclusively on you. You are focused on how you will benefit, what you stand to gain and what’s in it for you. You are not focused upon others. You look to do the minimum required in order to get the result you want. Your actions do not reflect the greater good and expansion for all.
Opposite of this is the Creative Mindset. It is the mentality of infinite abundance and the increase for the benefit of everyone. Its focus is on helping and serving others. Zig Ziglar said that you will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want. When you are operating from a Creative Mindset you become intent on leaving the impression of an increase in everything you do. This translates into doing each task you undertake to the best of your ability. You place your focus on providing the fullest service possible for others.
In turn, you make the world a better place and support the universe’s inherent bias towards growth and expansion. I think of it as blessed and be blessed, I try very hard to live by this principle (though I’m far from perfect at it), and guess what? I am abundantly blessed.
Mindset Shift #3: Can vs. Can’t
Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right. This sounds like a cliché but it’s the truth. People who take charge of their lives personally and professionally rarely use the word can’t. Removing the word can’t from your vocabulary is one of the simplest but most effective things you can do for your mindset. When you reframe the word can’t by saying “I choose not to” you take ownership for your actions and start to shift your thinking.
Believing that you can is actually the first step to making your dreams come true. When you say what you can do you are in control of your actions and you have thought about why you’re choosing this action. It also forces you to reframe things in a much more positive and proactive way with more productive outcomes. This mindset shift can be learned, however it takes continual conscious thought and requires complete honesty with yourself.
The easiest way to shift your mind from can’t to can is to change the way you talk to yourself. Stop the negative, demeaning self-talk and start encouraging yourself with phrases like “I can do this”, “I got this” and “I have everything I need to make this happen”.
Now, make no mistake, changing your mindset takes deep conviction and diligence. It takes all the dedication you can muster up. But the good news is you can start today. And if you slip, and fall back into the wrong mindset, you can start again immediately. Each moment is a new beginning. And though these shifts may not happen completely overnight, if you start them now – and I mean RIGHT NOW – you will be well on your way to transforming your life, conquering your goals and LIVING YOUR DREAMS!
