Summer is one of the best time of the year. We go on vacations, on adventures, meet up with friends to eat BBQ and picnics, drink rosé on rooftops, the list goes on and on!
But for most of us, it is also a time where we go off track, how would we not? There are more temptations when we travel, and there are a whole lot more social gatherings centered around food and alcohol.
But it’s September now, and you are ready to get back on track so here are 3 simple steps for you to jump back on track:
Every word counts in this title, so let’s break it down. I mentioned 1 and not several goals because we want to ease back into a healthy routine and not overwhelm ourselves. If you’re not familiar yet with SMART goals here is a breakdown, SMART stands for:
Specific: What do you want to accomplish? Why is this goal important? Who is involved? Where is it located? Which resources or limits are involved?
Measurable: How much? How many? How will you know when it is accomplished?
Achievable: How can you accomplish this goal? How realistic is the goal?
Relevant: Does this seem worthwhile? Is this the right time?
Time-bound: When? What can you do six months from now? What can you do six weeks from now?
Once you have answered all these questions, I want you to make sure this goal is exciting and that you’ll take great pleasure working towards it. We are all human and we can’t stick to something we don’t enjoy. Whatever causes us pain we will naturally avoid and if this goal causes you more pain than pleasure you will start finding excuses to avoid doing the work towards it. So if the goal you decided on, doesn’t feel exciting, switch it or decrease it.
Remember, you’ll get results only if you can stick to a new routine. So always prefer to start slow and keep a good habit in the long run rather than going extreme and dropping after a couple of weeks.
Planning is key in reaching your new goal. So pick your calendar and start plugging in the activity you want to commit to, to reach your goal this fall. No need to plan for an entire month at once, events will pop up, friends will invite you over, so only plan out a week ahead at a time and make sure to free up 10min per week in your calendar to prep for the following week to always stay on top of your game.
Maybe your goal is to workout 3 times per week, so pick a time and a place in your calendar and book yourself in, just like if you were planning a meeting with someone from work. Your health should be as important, if not even more than professional meetings, so treat it as such and book yourself some “me time” for reaching your goal!
Let 2 to 3 close friends or family members know about your goal. Honestly, the more the better, but at least 1 person that you know will be on your back to check-in on you. If you can’t think of anyone, maybe hire a coach! It has been proven that when we hold ourselves accountable we have 65% more chances to stick to our goal.
Make sure to decide together on how you will report to those people: is it going to be weekly? Is it going to be a call? Are you going to share pictures? Again be as specific as possible if you want this to work. For example, for some people, reaching a fitness goal, requires them to put money on the line and sign-up for a fitness class that is set at a specific place and time. Figure out how you work best towards goals. To do this, look back and break down how you reached a previous goal.
You’re all set now, you have a plan to execute, so act on it, starting today! No more waiting until Monday to start a new chapter, this is your time to shine and to prioritize your health. You’ve got this!
