Schedule time to catch up.
Admittedly I’m not always good at this but I try to schedule time on a regular basis to catch up with my LDFs. Don’t be worried that this makes the calls seem routine –scheduling them ahead of time ensures that this important catch-up doesn’t get forgotten or pushed aside, and it gives me something to look forward to. And do your best not to cancel –even on my worst days, when I’m tired or overwhelmed and the last thing I want to do is talk on the phone, it’s those calls that pull me out of my funk and I always walk away feeling loved, supported and re-energized.
Keep up to date on your friend’s life, even the small stuff!
This is where social media can come in handy. I use Facebook and Instagram to stay on top of the small events in my friend’s life, and make sure to mention them to her in a text or on our next call. It’s a great way to have an “excuse” (not that you need one!) to reach out and connect. But don’t stop with social media –make sure to check in regularly, even if it’s just via text or email, because let’s face it, a lot of the stuff we’re going through and really need our friends for is not the stuff we’re putting on social media.
Schedule a girls getaway.
There’s nothing like a few days away from the hustle and bustle of life to reconnect and catch up on each other’s lives. Aim for a mini-getaway at least once per year (more often if you can!) and plan it in advance so work and family obligations don’t push it aside.
Always schedule your next get-together when you’re with each other.
This is one I’ve learned over time and it’s made all the difference. Whenever my bestie and I get together, we always schedule our next meet-up at that time. This ensures that we get something on the calendar so it doesn’t slip our minds once we’re apart. It’s a surefire way to make sure we see each other on a regular basis and gives us something to look forward to!
